The Scout pickup · Scout Terra · Independent reader’s guide
The Scout Terra: a pickup built the old way, powered the new way.
Body-on-frame. A solid rear axle. Lockers at both ends. A 5.5-foot bed. And a gasoline engine behind the rear axle whose only job is to recharge the battery. This is everything Scout Motors has said about its first pickup, the price it is targeting, when it says the truck will come, what the forecasters say instead, and how it stacks up against the trucks you can buy today.
The Scout truck in four numbers.
Every figure Scout has published is a target for a truck that is not yet in production. They are the numbers to plan around, not numbers anyone has measured.

What it is
What Scout has actually said about the Terra
Scout showed the Terra and the Traveler SUV together on October 24, 2024, and has added detail since: on its site, in interviews, and in a long series of posts to its reservation holders. Here is the truck as Scout describes it, with the blanks left blank.
- The frame and the axle
- Body-on-frame construction, independent front suspension, a solid rear axle and a front sway bar that disconnects for the rough stuff. Mechanical locking differentials front and rear are standard. That is pickup hardware, not crossover hardware.
- The bed
- Five and a half feet, with a rear window that retracts into the cab, one 240-volt and two 120-volt outlets, and an in-bed carrier for a 35-inch spare. Trucks on 33s carry the spare under the bed. A front trunk adds a 120-volt outlet and USB-C.
- Two ways to power it
- Battery only, on an 800-volt system, targeting up to 350 miles. Or the Harvester: a smaller battery plus a Volkswagen four-cylinder behind the rear axle that runs as a generator, targeting more than 500 miles, about 150 of them on battery. Both have a motor at each axle, nearly 1,000 pound-feet of torque, and 0 to 60 in as little as 3.5 seconds, per Scout.
- Work numbers
- More than 10,000 pounds of towing and nearly 2,000 pounds of payload, either powertrain. Ground clearance of more than 12 inches, and tires up to 35 inches from the factory. All targets. The full table is on the specs page.
- Where it’s built
- A new $2 billion plant in Blythewood, South Carolina, north of Columbia, planned for up to 200,000 vehicles a year and more than 4,000 jobs. The Harvester’s engine comes from Volkswagen’s plant in Silao, Mexico.
- How you buy
- Direct from Scout at a set price, with Scout-run studios and service and no dealer. A $100 refundable reservation holds a place in line. Dealer associations have sued to block direct sales; Scout says it is not changing course.

Questions people ask
What is the Scout pickup called?
The Scout Terra. Scout Motors, the brand Volkswagen Group revived in 2022, showed two vehicles in October 2024: the Terra pickup and the Traveler SUV. Both are built on the same body-on-frame platform at a new plant in Blythewood, South Carolina.
Is the Scout Terra electric?
Yes, at the wheels, always. It comes two ways: a battery-only truck targeting up to 350 miles, and the Harvester version, which adds a small gasoline engine that recharges the battery as you drive for a projected 500 miles or more. The engine never turns the wheels.
How much does the Scout truck cost?
Scout’s official statement is that retail prices are targeted to start under $60,000 for both the Terra and the Traveler, U.S. market, subject to change. The premium for the Harvester version has not been published.
When can I buy a Scout Terra?
Scout says initial production starts in 2027 at Blythewood with customers taking delivery in 2028, Harvester versions first. A third-party production forecast reported in April 2026 put the Terra at March 2030; Scout disputes it. Reservations are open now for a $100 refundable deposit.
How big is the Scout Terra’s bed?
Five and a half feet, with a rear window that retracts into the cab, a 240-volt outlet and two 120-volt outlets in the bed, and an in-bed carrier for a 35-inch spare tire.
Can I test drive a Scout Terra?
Not yet. There are no production trucks, and Scout sells direct rather than through dealers. The closest thing today is a long drive in a comparable body-on-frame pickup; the Carolina Auto Program runs five-and-a-half-hour beach drives in a Jeep Gladiator, a Ram Rebel and a Silverado Trail Boss on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Waiting on a Scout? Drive the trucks it was built to beat.
The Carolina Auto Program puts you in a Jeep Gladiator, a Ram 1500 Rebel or a Silverado Trail Boss for five and a half hours on the Carova 4x4 beach on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, no salesperson aboard, for $325. Then a no-haggle price in writing from a program dealer. If you want to know what a body-on-frame truck with lockers does in soft sand before the Terra ships, that is the closest thing there is.
